Hi I’m Michael Torkildsen an award-winning photographer. I’m self-taught and I understand the struggles of not being able to capture the essence of the places or people I was photographing. I spent months reading books, watching YouTube, and taking courses before the pieces finally fell into place. Now, I teach students an intuitive way to learn their camera and begin their own photography journey.

DSLR  or mirrorless camera. Any brand or model is fine, as long as it has manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. The kit lens that came with it is fine to. We all started here so you are in good company.

Hour ONE - Camera Modes Overview

  • The four reasons cameras are so darn difficult to figure out

  • Camera shooting modes: Pros do use these! I’ll show you under what situation they do. And I’ll show you how to use them as you transition to Manual.

  • Live mode: Shows you that what you see is what you get with your image.

  • Quick Menus - These are so handy yet few people utilize them.


Hour TWO - The Big Three & Reading Exposure

  • The Big Three overview, Aperture, Shutter, and ISO: This is the main idea to get. Everything else are just helper settings.

  • The Big Three as practical tools: Here I explain in practical terms how these are used to make your image.

  • Reading exposure, Light Meter & Histogram: Once you understand them as practical tools, you’ll nail the exposure every time.


Hour THREE - Secondary Tools

  • Drive modes

  • Focus area

  • Focus modes

  • Metering modes

In this lesson I’ll demystify these settings. This clarity will add confidence to your shooting.


Hour FOUR - Putting it all together

  • By this time we’ve broken it down into all the parts and here we put it all together so that you have the whole process nailed down.

  • Other Important camera knowledge: Building on that confidence I’ll explain a number of important features of your camera that will help you as you gain experience going forward.

  • Basic composition: See an INSTANT improvement in your photos with these not-so-common sense tips.

  • Essential camera equipment: Now that you are ready to shoot the world, let’s talk essential equipment. I’ll explain what gear the pros are using to get those amazing shots.

  • This is an online class held on Zoom.

  • Yes, I will record each session and make them available the next day.

  • Not a workbook per say but there is an exercise book that will accompany it.

  • I estimate your time commitment to be an hour each week for class and 15 minutes for the exercises.

  • Currently the evening training will be 7:00 pm CST, with replays available to others where this time is not convenient. If I get enough sign ups in a particular region I will make a second class for that group.
